What Is The Process Of Creating a Narrative In Games?

Anton Slashcev
Here is the pipeline I created and used when I was a Narrative Producer:

0) Logline
โ€” High-concept premise
โ€” Two or three sentences
โ€” Includes the protagonist, goal, and main conflict

1) Synopsis
โ€” Brief story overview (1-2 pages)
โ€” Follows a three-act structure
โ€” Outlines main plot points, key characters, and the overall story arc

2) Story Outline
โ€” Breakdown narrative into acts and major chapters
โ€” Highlight key events, character development, and plot twists
โ€” Roadmap for the entire story

2A) Worldbuilding
โ€” Create the game’s setting
โ€” Focus on aspects that influence the story and characters

2B) Characters Passports
โ€” Backstory and motivation
โ€” Key character traits
โ€” Role in the plot
โ€” Description of appearance
โ€” References

2C) Speech Characteristics
โ€” Unique speech patterns for each character
โ€” Examples: old-fashioned or slang speech, stuttering, etc.
โ€” Sample of dialogue

3) Chapter Flowchart
โ€” Visual representation of story progression
โ€” Detail branching paths, scenes, player decisions, and possible outcomes
โ€” Indicates game mechanics used in scenes

3A) Art Description
โ€” Descriptions and references for the art team
โ€” Includes character designs, environments, items, and key scenes

3B) Narrative Features Description
โ€” Tools/features for narrative
โ€” Dialogue system, branching path mechanics
โ€” Interactive storytelling elements, etc.

4) Writing Dialogue
โ€” Create engaging dialogues fitting characters and advancing the story
โ€” Describe cut scenes and character actions

4A) Secondary Narrative
โ€” Environmental storytelling
โ€” Lore texts
โ€” Item descriptions
โ€” Barks & optional dialogues

5) Voice Acting & Motion Capture
โ€” Casting and recording voice actors
โ€” Motion capture to enhance character animations (if required)

6) Integration
โ€” Implement and configure created narrative content into the game build
โ€” Creating cutscenes

7) Testing and Iteration
โ€” Playtest, gather feedback, and iterate
โ€” Improve pacing, engagement, and coherence with gameplay

8) Localization
โ€” Translate and adapt the narrative for different languages and cultures
โ€” Ensure the main narrative is tested and approved
