Publishing Games Takes an Army: The Power of Expert Teams

You've all heard the saying, "It takes a village to raise a child," but have you heard, "It takes a f*cking army to publish a game" (John Wright 2023)?I've been brutally honest about the current state of the market, explaining in detail some of the reasons why developers and publishers are finding it harder than ever to launch successful games.Kwalee is fortunate enough to be one of the few companies currently launching multiple games at once. At Slush last week, a VC asked me what our secret sauce was — how do we maintain a solid pipeline with qualified new games that are profitable?I had only one answer for him, and it's the same reason why I believe that moving forward, the big publishers will continue to be the successful ones: resources, specifically, a massive team of experts in a […]

Game Subscription Truthers Remain the Industries Flat Earthers

The Wall Street Journal reports Netflix is considering IAP and ads to monetize the $1B a year it's spending on gaming. So far, they've bought old F2P mobile titles and removed IAP to the tune of fewer than 1% of subscribers their playing games daily. Like Apple Arcade, Netflix gaming is quickly becoming the hospice of F2P; a pivot to IAP and ads is a come-to-Jesus moment that Microsoft, Apple, and Roblox could learn from. Despite a morgue brimming with OnLive, EA Play, UPlay+, Gamefly, Stadia, and GameTap, along with the countless litany of failed individual game subscriptions, gaming executives are keen to ignore the economics of what makes gaming different from all other media. In 2021, Netflix's Chief Product Officer claimed: "We feel our subscription model yields some opportunities to focus on a set of game experiences that are […]

Pocket Champs: Exceptional Growth & Clever Game Design

Pocket Champs has scaled to $100k/day in IAP revenue with a whopping $40k/day on top of that in Ad revenue. We were joined by Madbox’s Game Director Arthur Michel to help us dissect the game and make sure we’re not talking BS! Pocket Champs does some pretty clever things to maximize ad revenue without taking away from the user experience. The first is the clever use of rewarded ads that reduce cool-down timers for the training bags. Most networks assume that users who watch many RV videos in a row, pay less attention to the ad. Thus the networks are willing to pay less for those subsequent impressions. The drop-off in revenue is usually around 5 IMP/DAU per session. Training bag timers can be reduced by 30 min per RV video, which can be watched consecutively with a 5 RV […]

Navigating Job Search Challenges in the Games Industry

The games industry is going through challenging times in terms of recent lay offs. There are lots of people moving currently around and looking for new work to land - which is a very roller coaster type of a ride with many ups and downs; specifically given how in general some companies approach recruiting with somewhat unhealthy means. One day you feel really great on your progress, while on the other day you feel the opposite due to how some companies handle their stuff -- this is something I can relate to from my recent experience; due to which I'm having all my respect towards the people looking for their next journey. I feel you all, it's not easy out there.Couple examples to share:1. Recruiter decides your motivation level to a position where you applied, before you get to move […]

Insomniac Leaks Paint a Bleak Console Landscape

Insomniac leaks reveal Playstation lost 3M MAU over the last three years. At a time when gaming is at its grandest heights, consoles have failed to seize the moment. Sony and Microsoft have forgotten their role as platforms, purchasing dead-end franchises instead of fostering third-party innovation. Meanwhile, Steam gained over 90M users, a ~35% increase over the same period, with Valve founder Gabe Newell downing New Zealand pies as third-party development rakes in billions as Valve barely lifts a finger.Sony's lavish string of single-player blockbuster titles like God of War, Spider-Man, and Zero Horizon Dawn certainly have positive ROI, but another ten years of $300M roulette spins (budgets also leaked) hardly feels digestible. It's a near miracle these titles performed critically well as they have, illustrating why Sony executives rush toward live-service investments. For its part, Microsoft squandered Gears of War and […]

Your Mental Health is as equally important as Physical

Your Mental Health is as equally important as Your Physical ones🧘‍♀️ This thought came to my mind while reading the book Depression and Burnout by Klaus Bernhardt. The book has 10 most popular causes of depression and burnout starting from side effects and poor diet to savior behavior and perfectionism. For different cases, different methods are working: physical exercises, medication, therapy, etc.But the most important is to have support. When I felt very unwell I decided to conceal it not to worry my closest people. I smiled even when I wanted to cry and made myself do uncomfortable things. It is a trap. Anyone who hides their problems to protect others from pain and sadness achieves the opposite result. You just delay the inevitable. Don't be afraid to ask for help, your people will understand you 💜Have you or your closer people experienced […]

How Did Top 100 Grossing Games Respond to Google CMP?

As I wrote in my previous articles (here and here), in May 2023. Google announced that they will stop showing ads to users in the EEA and UK regions unless the publishers implement a Google-certified CMP that would enable them to collect TCF 2.2 compliant consent. The deadline for implementation was 16th January 2024, which has recently passed but even though Google didn’t make any official statements, it seems that Google will only start to gradually enforce this policy from 1st February and will fully enforce it by the end of that month. In this article, we’ll cover how the top 100 grossing games responded to Google’s CMP requirements but will also include other games that we consider important to reflect on and try to highlight some best practices and other important aspects on this topic. Apart from that, we […]

Why do I love Arcades?

Why do I love Arcades? 🕹️ Arcade is a coin or token-operated entertainment machine. They were the predecessors of modern computer games. There are different games (from PinBall and Pac-Man to Dance Dance Revolution and Dead or Alive). Most games are based on skill but some are just on luck (of the minority, let's leave them for the casino). Arcades can be for one player or more (multiplayer or cooperation).Believe me or not but for me, physical presence is important and helps me get more involved in the game. And a system with rewards in the form of tickets you can exchange for gifts helps a lot 🎟️ As a designer, I’m playing arcade and say to everyone quote-unquote that I’m doing research, haha 🤣
