Are the gaming industry layoffs related to AI? No.

Are the gaming industry layoffs related to AI? No. Part 1 - AI doesn't replace R&D, and the lack of R&D caused this.Gaming companies aren't getting huge AI gains yet. We're still in the experimental phase where most gains are obscured by the time and resources needed to test and learn new processes. Those resources? Typically a small unit is relegated to creating tools or marketing content that might help, but not fundamentally change the business. It would take a whole new business made from scratch to fully embrace the gains. *wink wink*Even when there are gains, they still need new talent & processes to operate them. *more winking and pointing to the comments*And those gains? For now, there are efficiency gains. Not creative achievements or discoveries of new business opportunities. So what's going on? What's dragging the gaming sector down right now?I believe it […]

Top 10 gaming predictions for 2024 by John Wright

I was recently approached by a media outlet to share my top 5 gaming predictions for 2024, which made me think, f*ck it, I’m going to extend the list to my top 10 for the year overall (in no particular order): 1. Consolidation among top gaming companies will continue, making it tougher for small to medium-sized studios to thrive independently. Even successful ones will consider partnering with larger publishers due to the increasing challenges in user acquisition and profitable game launches.2. Mergers and acquisitions will see a resurgence, with venture capitalists increasing their investments, albeit not reaching the levels of two years ago. I've observed a growing number of investments and discussions among business leaders recently which will come to fruition soon (hopefully). VC firms, having had a quieter year, will need to take more risks but will do so […]

A few thoughts about missing opportunities.

A few thoughts about missing opportunities. In life, the FOMO pain is real, especially when you are actually missing that opportunity. Life feels so bitter, and disappointing. It brutally sucks! But I learned the hard way that there is always another opportunity waiting around the corner, and another one, and another one. And so many times in my life and career, missing something actually led to a way better outcome - another deal, another job, another meeting, that would have been missed if I hadn't lost the first one. Why am I even thinking about this now? Well, some time ago, we did not get into the deal, and I was really upset, and FOMO had me crushed. But today, we landed an amazing deal at a whole new level, and we would not have had the bandwidth and capacity […]

RPG Idle Space: Monetization on Gameplay in Alien Invasion

In this week's post, we'll explore the factors contributing to the success of Alien Invasion: RPG Idle Space. Developed by Crazylabs, Alien Invasion is a role-playing game (RPG) that integrates idle mechanics, allowing players to concentrate primarily on their character's advancement. Set in a hybrid-casual gaming environment, players nurture a small and initially sluggish alien creature into a formidable conqueror, primarily focused on consuming unsuspecting humans. Alien Invasion: RPG Idle Space is accessible on Google Play and the App Store, and more recently, it has become available on Steam as well. Core Game Loop The fundamental gameplay loop of this game is straightforward: Eating humans equals acquiring resources. The primary resource in question is Meat, obtained through the consumption of human flesh. Subsequently, these resources can be utilized to enhance the statistics of the alien character which is the meta […]

Is this company suited for the VC-backed path?

When evaluating an investment, I often ask: Is this company suited for the VC-backed path? For early-stage investors, a major risk is determining whether a follow-on VC will invest in the company down the line. While some startups may never need additional funding, this is the exception rather than the rule—99% of startups that raise pre-seed and survive will require further capital.Let's approach this from first principles:1) Will a later-stage investor give money to this company in 18-24 months?2) What conditions or milestones need to be met for that fundraising to take place in 18-24 months?3) What actions need to be taken now to ensure this happens?4) Is this team capable of executing these actions with the capital and resources available to them?

Palworld Achieves Highest Player Count of Any Paid Steam Game Since 2018

After four days, Palworld, an early-access survivor game described as "Pokemon with guns," grossed ~$108M over three days en route to the 2nd highest concurrent player count for a paid title on Steam. It's an outstanding success for Pocket Pair, a 50-person Japanese team with $7m raised. But like early access hits Valhiem, Battlebit, and Temtem before it, an inability to quickly deploy capital hampers compounding return. Instead of these titles having their best days to look forward to, they're in the rear-view mirror, the equivalent of peaking in high school, but this time, you get millions in cash for the ordeal. Teams should follow the Kikta Studio model: prove a trajectory and let someone else build the bow. When founders sell games, they retain control of their destiny and find themselves newly rich with modelable capital, allowing games to […]

Blizzard is Dead, and Its Murders Are Still Loose

Phil Spencer, Microsoft Gaming CEO, named Johanna Faries the new president of Blizzard, closing a pivotal moment in the ATVI-Microsoft merger. Faries faces the challenge of revitalizing Blizzard amidst declining revenue and engagement across its franchises. The situation is dire enough that Faries inherits a needed rebirth of Blizzard. The Blizzard of old is dead, and several causal agents are responsible. The Ship of Theseus is a thought experiment about when a ship remains the same after trading its planks one by one with another ship. The same experiment applies to Blizzard, who has replaced a good deal of its workforce after they left for new start-ups. Over the last decade, venture capital siphoned copious amounts of Blizzard employees into new start-ups, aided by California's law banning non-competes. The VC-backed combination of Dreamhaven (fmr. Blizzard founder), Second Dinner (fmr. Hearthstone team), Magic Soup […]

Keeping Players in the Game: We Are Warriors

This week's blog will explore the dynamic universe of We Are Warriors, a Hybrid-Casual Tower Defense game with idle mechanics developed by Lessmore UG. Praised for its straightforward elements and intuitive gameplay mechanics, this game has garnered acclaim within the gaming community. One notable aspect is its unique approach to the First Time User Experience (FTUE), where failure within initial levels serves as a strategic tool. While some game developers shy away from incorporating failure into the onboarding phase due to potential player dissatisfaction, We Are Warriors embraces this concept, effectively leveraging it to enhance the overall gaming experience. Core Game Loop One of the most captivating elements of this game is its simplistic and intuitive core gameplay loop. Interestingly, the game's simplicity is its greatest strength, as it empowers players to devise strategic approaches to conquer each level and […]
