A cool design resource: Combo Chart

I was looking at the stats on an Elden Ring enemy and discovered a cool design resource: a combo chart, basically a State Diagram of enemy movesets ⚔ State Diagrams are a game design staple. We use them for all kinds of things, from showcasing a games skill progression to mapping out the growable plants in a gardening system to displaying a games hub world and which levels the player can access when. (I'm curious, what else have you seen them used for?) They're a great tool for visually mapping out a complex system and getting a gut check on how it will work. Additionally, they're excellent for communicating between team members, making it extremely clear what needs to be created. 🗺 All that said, I've never seen one used to document the movements, and even more so how the […]

I have a dream for the game industry

I have a dream for the game industry, where we not only fix what ails us but use our example to inspire other industries besides. And I guarantee we can do it, together. 🫂 We've now been faced with going on the worst three years the game industry has ever known. Companies hired like crazy during the 2020 boon, knowingly bringing on too many team members they probably wouldn't be able to support as the pandemic ended. And as a result, we've seen more layoffs in a more condensed period than literally ever before. But! The thing about the game industry is... the people who work here are wonderful. Outcast dorks come together to celebrate something we love, together. We are kind and energetic. We love to share our weird hobbies and get fascinated by the art of our fellows. […]

Incentivized Advertising For F2P Gaming UA: 101

Here is the link to the original article. Once dismissed as a cheap trick to game App Store rankings, incentivized advertising has transformed into one of the most sophisticated and data-driven strategies in modern user acquisition. Today, it’s not just about installs—it’s about aligning user intent with long-term growth, turning low-intent browsers into high-value players. Incentivized or rewarded advertising, as people like to rebrand it, has had a bad rap ever since Apple (and Techcrunch) went after early mobile f2p UA innovator Tapjoy in 2011. Incentivized advertising was blamed for sullying the App Store and making the App Store Top Charts something advertisers could buy to enter, not only gain a position because a game was popular. I was at Tapjoy in 2011, and it wasn’t that we were necessarily selling “App Store rankings” to our advertising partners, but it was a happy […]

What’s up with paid growth in the mobile gaming market?

What's happening with paid growth in the mobile gaming market? It's a question I get asked frequently, and of course, there are many ways to approach it. I decided to examine it from a data perspective (based on data ai data). I analyzed data comparing the share of paid downloads within the total download pool for various mobile gaming segments (top 10 games worldwide by revenue, top 11-50, etc.) across different years. Naturally, such an analysis has limitations. For instance, it is very hard for any tool to distinguish all paid downloads, and this analysis considered worldwide data (perhaps focusing on a single country, like the US, would be more insightful).Nevertheless, even from this data, we can observe the following:🔹 On Android, paid downloads saw strong growth from 2019 to 2021, with a significant dip in 2022, followed by a […]

130,000+ layoffs in the tech industry so far in 2024.

130,000+ layoffs in the tech industry so far in 2024.20,000+ layoffs in the gaming industry since 2023. These are depressing numbers. Every time I open my LinkedIn and read another post about someone being laid off and still looking for a job, I feel compassion and wonder what more I can do to help 😔What resources do you use to stay motivated and keep moving forward during those times? Over the past few months, I’ve discovered through my coaching calls that what people need most is #motivation #energy, and #clarity to take the right next steps 💪But hiring a coach is expensive 💸 —so what are the alternatives? That’s when my partners, Marko Kecman Martha Pierce, and I sat down to design a scalable solution for millions of job seekers who need coaching but can’t afford it.With Olivya, you can […]

Is your top-performing ad aligned with FTUE in the game?

Is your top-performing ad aligned with the first-time user experience in the game? During the diagnostic phase of our engagements, we too often find little to no connection between these two crucial touchpoints. This disconnect can lead to poor Day 1 retention and an unfavorable LTV-CAC ratio.Luckily, making changes to the onboarding process is typically one of the easiest ways to address these issues. Be sure to review your funnel and ensure you aren't losing the users you’ve invested so much in acquiring.

Wonderful World of Gaming #6

What I found interesting in the wonderful world of Gaming #006 🎮 Has Apple Arcade finally found its niche?I recently took a dive into Apple Arcade after not touching it for quite some time and to my delight I found a few absolute corkers I’d previously played on Steam such as Slay the Spire, Vampire Survivors, Dead Cells, and with Monster Train coming soon it got me thinking… what if Apple Arcade could work with Steam developers to bring their games to the platform, I’m sure the extra revenue stream wouldn’t hurt. Then I stumbled on the amazing FANTASIAN effectively a PC&C title (think Octopath Traveler It was produced and written by Hironobu Sakaguchi of Final Fantasy fame). Perhaps this is how Apple Arcade will become dominant on IOS by capturing the hearts of Steam players.https://lnkd.in/ey74ryBNhttps://lnkd.in/eEEB4UCW🕹 That WB announcement...I’ve been saying for a […]
