Game Development is a Roulette Wheel

Game development is a roulette wheel, and we’re all just spinning it, hoping to land on a hit. The illusion of control is what deceives us. We think we make strategic decisions, plan roadmaps, and predict market trends, but in reality, we are simply navigating the chaotic laws of randomness. Success in this industry is a puppet show, where market shifts, player behavior, and even platform algorithms pull the strings, while we scramble to keep up, pretending we have a say.

Each project is a gamble. Some teams strike gold seemingly overnight, while others, with just as much talent and effort, watch their work fade into obscurity. Some try to crack the code, searching for patterns, building “foolproof” monetization strategies, chasing trends, and relying on data-driven decisions. But the hard truth is that no formula guarantees success. What worked yesterday might be irrelevant tomorrow. Chaos is the only constant in this equation.

So how do we, as game developers, not lose our minds in this industry?

1. Accept the Unpredictability – Stop expecting fairness. Even the best-designed, most innovative game can flop while a shallow hyper-casual cash grab dominates the charts. Accept that randomness plays a huge role and plan accordingly.

2. Reduce the Cost of Failure – Since no one can guarantee a hit, make sure failure is survivable. Keep development cycles lean, test ideas early, and avoid putting all resources into a single bet.

3. Focus on the Craft, Not Just the Outcome – If you tie your happiness only to financial success, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. Find joy in the process of creating, learning, and improving. Passion doesn’t guarantee profit, but it does make the journey bearable.

4. Stay Agile and Adaptive – The industry shifts fast. If you’re too rigid, you’ll break. Keep your skills sharp, follow trends but don’t become a slave to them, and be ready to pivot when needed.

5. Manage Expectations – Whether you’re an indie dev or working in a major studio, understand that no one has a crystal ball. Expect setbacks, anticipate randomness, and don’t take failure personally.

At the end of the day, game development is a cosmic lottery. Some succeed, some fail, and often there’s no clear explanation why. But as long as we keep spinning the wheel, learning from every turn, and adapting to the unpredictable, we give ourselves the best chance to stay in the game — without losing ourselves to the chaos.
