Color Block Jam by Rollic scaled to $300K A Day

Color Block Jam by Rollic scaled to $300K 🤑 a day in just 2 months 😱 Developed by Gybe Games, this is another successful Hybrid-casual puzzler in Rollic's portfolio, and we couldn't wait to review it for you 😎 Core gameplay is deterministic puzzle, with a timer as loose condition. This is again similar to games like Twisted Tangle, where levels are not randomized and you build up your strategy in trial/error fashion. If you lose, there is literally a "Fail Offer" as per the good Hybrid puzzler standard nowadays 😅. As said, Rollic has lots of experience with this specific setup and of course Hybrid-casual puzzlers by itself, so no wonder this game is scaling like crazy currently 💹. Core idea is a great iteration on tile moving puzzles, where you have limited space to work with. The iteration […]

Moon Active laid off staff despite $2B revenue in 2024

Moon Active, the gaming giant behind Coin Master and Family Island, recently laid off dozens of employees worldwide, including in Israel. The company attributed the cuts to an “organizational restructuring” aimed at aligning its structure with its strategy. Moon Active operates a major development center in Kyiv, alongside offices in Romania, Belarus, and Lithuania, and employs about 2,500 people. Founded in 2011, the company was valued at $5 billion in 2021 after raising $300 million in a secondary funding round led by Insight Partners. Unlike most startups, Moon Active has raised just $10 million in equity funding, with subsequent rounds focused on secondary share sales for employees and investors. Other notable backers include Andalusian Private Capital, Gigi Levy-Weiss, Guy Gamzu, and David Alliance. Moon Active's flagship title, Coin Master, surpassed $6 billion in revenue in 2024, according to Sensor Tower. […]

Behind Archero 2

Archero implemented literally the whole core gameplay of Bacon's Revenge as an event 😅. We got to the point, where established games are literally absorbing new concepts as means to not only add flavor to their old feature set, but also keep their current players within their ecosystem, where they can offer the same novelty as competition. The event is called Backpack Battle and its origin can be traced back to PC hit Backpack Hero, which all these inventory weapon management ⚔️ mechanics are trying to iterate. Bacon's Revenge itself is a combination of Doodle Magic, which streamlined the tower defense genre by ditching a road and Backpack Hero, where you need to collect and merge weapons as your skills in a roguelite fashion. Why keep this within Archero 1 and not built a separate competitor game? Because Archero still makes […]

10 Game Design Rules You Must Know

10 Game Design Rules You Must Know:: 1. 🔍 Reward curiosity ↳ If players wander off the main path, make it worth their time. • Hidden treasures, story snippets, or rare items keep exploration exciting and rewarding.2. 🏆 Make victory and defeat crystal clear ↳ Avoid confusing win/lose conditions. • Players need to understand how they can succeed, and why they failed. • Visual cues like progress bars or danger symbols (e.g., red or sharp objects) help a lot.3. 🔄 Be consistent ↳ Patterns build trust. • If the “exit” button is always top-right, keep it there. • Never break the rules you’ve taught players.4. 🌟 Guide, don’t lecture ↳ Nobody likes a dull tutorial. • Help players learn through subtle hints, not drawn-out lessons. • Let them discover solutions on their own.5. ⚖️ Keep it fair ↳ Unfair moments […]

Social Group Monetization: High-Level Theory and Applications

Social group monetization is a powerful and nuanced approach to player engagement, which leverages the dynamics of group behavior and interaction to create monetization opportunities that feel rewarding and intrinsic. This strategy goes beyond individual spending to focus on how collective engagement can drive revenue while fostering community satisfaction. I explore the underlying principles in this article and provide actionable examples for various genres, from RPGs to casual games. Note: The topics and pointers here I’m introducing are something that I’ve learned also by studying economists and their writings on the field, and some of the credits should go to them on putting my head towards rightly tuned channels around these things on top of my existing understanding and know-how. You can find some of these directly from my Recommendations section here: https://gamesalchemy.substack.com/recommendations — from where I would suggest you checking […]
