One day my team and I were very close to burn out.

I spent 4000 days at Gameloft. One day my team and I were very close to burn out. We were scaling fast..Growing pains ..When in the moment, we had to conquer. To accomplish objectives. The hamsterwheel effect was strong.Every day felt like a fight, and we needed to look at the bigger picture.Because constant challenges lead to burn out.Running a game studio can be overwhelming at times.- Challenges to face- Obstacles to overcome- Goals to be met- Projects to be deliveredAnd the list goes on. But taking a step back to look at the long term vision. Can make or break the deal for your game studio.Because it allows for you to put things in perspective.Long term goals must be set as priorities.Don't put out fires daily.(cloning yourself is not an option)Set time to prevent them strategically. PS. If your game studio is […]

Understanding Retention Part 2: Retention Isnโ€™t Everything

๐Ÿšจ Understanding Retention Part 2: When Retention Isnโ€™t EverythingWe often make quick decisions based solely on retention numbers. But there are times when other metrics hold more weight.โ“ Letโ€™s take a look at a retention curve of a project with Day 1, Day 7, and Day 30 rates:* D1: 17.5%* D7: 4.5%* D30: 1.6%These retention numbers are below industry benchmarks, both short and long term.๐Ÿค” Would you continue working on this project? Before making a decision, let's look at an important factor:๐Ÿ‘‰ ROAS (Return on Ad Spend): the amount of revenue earned for every dollar spent on advertising.๐Ÿ’กThis retention data is from Nitro Nation: Car Racing Game. AVG Rating in App Segments in US

Quality matters, especially in a competitive space like the app and game market. For games and apps, their rating is one of the easiest and fastest ways for users to understand the value and quality of the product. When encountering a problem with a specific app campaign in a country, it is essential to check the app or game's rating in that country. This seems obvious, yet I'm still surprised by how many people involved in user acquisition activities fail to check ratings or discuss with different teams at their company how to improve them.To see the importance of this topic, it's enough to look at data showing the average app and game scores in the US in recent months (games sorted by revenue + apps, iGaming apps sorted by downloads). Here we segments including top 10 apps, top 21-50 games […]

From Boom to Bust: Gaming Startups in Finland

Today, no successful companies are emerging in Finland's games industry. As a local investor in Helsinki, Finland, there aren't many new startups I can confidently invest in or see the potential for growth. From my perspective, Finland has lost momentum.Things were different in the 2010s. Ten years ago, Supercell had just been acquired by SoftBank. Rovio was a significant developer with Angry Birds, and we had companies like Small Giant Games with Empires and Puzzles. The mobile studio Seriously emerged with its Best Fiends franchise, followed by Reworks with Redecor. These companies reached several hundred million exits. Now, there aren't any contenders for that milestone. Why has this situation occurred? It's not unique to Finland; it could happen anywhere with specific intentions made before, during, and after a certain period. I believe three factors are essential: the market, leadership, and bootstrapping.Firstly, […]
