Pokรฉmon TCG has earned $100 million in IAP

๐Ÿ’ฒPokรฉmon TCG has earned $100 million in IAP revenue just three weeks after launching globally. I took a closer look at how their in-game shop is designed, and here are quick observations: The shop appears right after the tutorial, before your first battle. It might seem a bit pushy, but in this case, it works because players naturally want to collect more cards (the strength of the Pokรฉmon IP plays an important role here)โ€”and the shop lets you buy currencies to open packs faster.2๏ธโƒฃ ๐˜๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ฃ๐˜ด๐˜ค๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฑ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜ข ๐˜ง๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ญ.One of the first products promoted by developers is a ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฏ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป. A look at the latest data (based on Sensor Tower) shows that: โ–ถ๏ธ 2024 is proving much stronger for mobile gaming than 2023. โ–ถ๏ธ October 2024 marked the first month in a while to see significant year-over-year download growth, surpassing even revenue growth (13% vs. 9% YoY). โ–ถ๏ธ iPads exhibit similar trends in October. โ–ถ๏ธ Android growth appears stagnant in recent months, despite some minor positive movements.

Brutally Honest #139

Hey, FAM! Whatโ€™s up? ๐Ÿฅƒ Drink talk Planing a day trip to San Francisco. Anyone around Nov 26 or Nov 28? ๐ŸฆฉTip of the week *BREAKING NEWS* AdROAS is live on Facebook. Start campaigns ASAP. It's already rolled out to 50% of advertisers, and you need to track the AdImpression event properly. No more shitty workarounds. Meta is finally getting on the AdROAS trend. It is only 2 years later than it should be, but better late than never! Jokes aside, Google, AppLovin, Unity, and Mintegral have already enabled AdROAS campaigns, but Facebook has historically lacked this functionality. ย  ย  For instructions on how to implement the event, see the official documentation. Bringing Friends = Bigger Rewards!

๐ŸŽฒ Bringing Friends = Bigger Rewards! Just unlocked an event in "Dice Dreams" that caught my eye. It ties rewards to your social network: the more friends you connect, the better your rewards. Simple idea, but it feels fresh and meaningful in execution. What stands out for me: 1๏ธโƒฃ It adds a social layer. Youโ€™re not just playing soloโ€”youโ€™re encouraged to involve your friends, making the experience feel more collaborative and connected. 2๏ธโƒฃ Win-win for players and the game. Players enjoy bigger rewards, while the game drives higher engagement and organic growth. 3๏ธโƒฃ The Facebook connection. Beyond the rewards, itโ€™s a clever way for the game to collect user data for future targeting. Whether itโ€™s ads, re-engagement campaigns, or more personalized offers, this is data gold for game developers. Itโ€™s an interesting mix of player benefit and business strategy. What […]

Elevations & Player Visibility

In previous posts about navigable levels, I've often been asked whether elevation changes and ramps significantly affect player's perception. The short answer is yes; ramps are also a design tool! By using ramps, we can guide the player's attention, control their visibility, and carefully pace their movement through the environment. This helps us tell a story through the space itself. In the sketch I'm sharing today, I illustrate two scenarios (extreme case examples) where elevation is used to craft different gameplay dynamics. In simple terms, the key elements of a route that we see in these examples are:- Where the player is (๐Ž๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ข๐ง),- Where they need to go (๐Ž๐›๐ฃ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž),- The surrounding navigable areas near the objective (๐‹๐จ๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง),- And the path to reach the objective (๐๐š๐ญ๐ก).๐ˆ๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฌ๐œ๐ž๐ง๐š๐ซ๐ข๐จ, the objective is positioned beyond an upward […]

Why Rovio Could be Poison to SEGA

Why Rovio Entertainment Could be Poison to SEGAโ€”and How They Can Fix It. Rovioโ€™s golden days with Angry Birds are gone. A look at AppMagic reveals the story: churning downloads, revenue, and MAUs. Latest bets on high-risk, high-cost titlesโ€”e.g., Angry Birds Journey and Bloom City Matchโ€”are poorly positioned to catch emerging trends or gain traction in competitive genres like puzzles. The Problem: Stuck in the Past.Rovio is slow to adapt to fast-paced mobile games market. They arenโ€™t leaning on commercial or scientific processes to evaluate opportunities in new, high-potential genres. Instead, they continue to 2x on categories where e.g., King, Playrix, and Dream Games dominate.Take Bloom City Match. Itโ€™s dropped into the most competitive puzzle games segment, crowded with competition. Itโ€™s a high-risk bet in a category with high CPIs, churned-out cohorts, and a shrinking ROAS profile. And while Angry Birds […]
