Hearthstone is Back in Chinese Mobile Stores

Hearthstone is back in Chinese mobile stores to break its own records! 🇨🇳🚀In January 2023, Blizzard’s games were removed from Chinese stores after their 14-year licensing agreement with NetEase expired. After 20 months, the Blizzard-NetEase agreement is back in place, and so is Hearthstone — one of the most beloved collectible card games (CCG) worldwide. 🃏✨And Chinese players couldn’t be more excited! Before the exit, Hearthstone was pulling in an impressive $2.4M/month in China during 2021-2022, according to AppMagic. Fast forward to October 2024, and it’s already brought in over $13.5M — and the month isn’t even over yet! 📈🔥This is yet another great example of how Western games thrive when entering the Chinese market! I wrote about other games with similar success stories in one of my previous posts, check it out as well: https://lnkd.in/dRnXu3Gg

LEGO & Fortnite

Fortnite collaborates with so many IPs that it’s easy to forget the game itself is a powerful IP 🧱the LEGO Group just launched a new line of physical playsets based on Fortnite, and I absolutely love this move! While exploring UEFN and getting blown away by the LEGO Fortnite regime, I overlooked the potential of Fortnite becoming a part of the LEGO universe—not just the other way around. 🏰Back in April 2022, KIRKBI (owners of LEGO) invested $2B in Epic Games. With that level of investment, it was only a matter of time before we saw deeper integration between the two brands. And LEGO isn’t the only major partner. Earlier this year, Disney invested $1.5B in Epic Games. 💰Given the epic (🙃) results we’ve already seen from the LEGO collab, I’m excited to see where Epic could go with Disney—especially considering […]

Can Tencent Actually Acquire Ubisoft?

Can Tencent Actually Acquire Ubisoft? 🤔There've been talks about it lately, but Guillemot Brothers took some strategic steps to protect their company from acquisition back in September 2022. 📅 At that time, Tencent increased its stake in Ubisoft from 4.5% to 9.99%, but the deal came with an important condition:❗ Tencent wouldn’t be able to increase its stake in the company for the following 8 years. So far, only two years have passed, and six more are still to go. This condition was specifically structured to safeguard the Guillemot family’s control and prevent any aggressive acquisition attempts from Tencent. 🚫So if both companies were to pursue a deal, they’d have to navigate this restriction—meaning a lot of paperwork and negotiations. If you want to learn more about it, I left the link for the Sep’22 deal analysis we made for InvestGame in […]

Startups are already raising money for Telegram-based games

Startups are already raising money for Telegram-based games 🤔 Last week, I wrote about the phenomenal success of Hamster Kombat, which hit 110 million MAU and made Telegram one of the biggest platforms for play-to-earn games. Today, while looking through the deals for an upcoming InvestGame report we are preparing, I came across several investments targeting Telegram-based games — something I hadn’t noticed until recently! While some startups like PlaysOut and Animoca’s Gamee raised funds to publish multi-genre games for their Telegram mini-apps, others clearly took more inspiration from the recent success of Notcoin and Hamster Kombat.  🐹For example, Anomaly raised $1.45M in May’24 for ‘play-to-airdrop’ games, while Akedo secured funding for its ‘tap-to-earn’ game Akedog — both heavily influenced by Notcoin and Hamster Kombat. Some of the investors in these rounds are Yuga Labs, Kenetic Capital, 4399 Games, Mozaik Capital, […]

Hamster Kombat is bigger than Monopoly GO and Royal Match

Hamster Kombat is bigger than Monopoly GO, Royal Match, and many of my favorite games. 😳 But how? We all know the story: a mix of greed, virality, and referral marketing. It’s easy to get caught up in those talks about the second wave of play-to-earn hype and the future of gaming and Web3…But let us focus on what’s happening right now—the impact of this viral clicker on Telegram. 🐹Today, with 110M MAU, Hamster Kombat now makes up 15% of all Telegram users, according to AppMagic. So what did these insane numbers do for the messenger? — Helped the platform reach 700M MAU and brought in millions of new users 🆕— Popularized the Telegram App Center and flooded it with tap-to-earn projects 📈— Drove millions to download Tonkeeper wallet, greatly expanding the TON ecosystem 🔗Find out more in our latest article!

Playtika Acquires SuperPlay for $2B

Two of the biggest competitors for Coin Master and Monopoly Go will be operated by Playtika 🎲 1️⃣ One year ago, in Sep’23, Playtika acquired InnPlay, the developer behind the casual casino game Animals & Coins, for $300m.2️⃣ Last week, Playtika announced a $2B acquisition of SuperPlay, the developer of Dice Dreams — the third-best casual casino game. This means Playtika will own 2 of the Top-4 games in the Casual Casino genre! Both deals follow Playtika’s strategy of buying successful studios and fueling their portfolio with resources and expertise to reach new heights. 🚀But does it work? It actually does! Animals & Coins saw its monthly IAP revenue grow by 65% after a year under Playtika’s umbrella, according to AppMagic. Yeah, it’s hardly can be seen on the chart, but it is there! 😅Do you think Dice Dreams will […]

No More AAA Ports on Apple Presentation: Here’s Why

Remember the 2023 Apple Event? Resident Evil, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, and big talk about AAA games coming to mobile. Fast forward to 2024: the headliner is Honor of Kings: World, an MMORPG by Tencent’s mobile hit maker, TiMi Studio. Why the shift from AAA ports to mobile-focused titles? 🤔The reason is simple: AAA console ports aren’t working, and the numbers by AppMagic back it up.— Too high one-time spend for mobile users 💸— Gameplay unsuited for mobile short-session scenarios⏳— Inferior graphics and controls at the same price 🎮These are some of the reasons why those games fail while performing greatly on their primary platforms. While iPhone 16’s basic model will now support these games, unlike last year’s Pro-only availability, I doubt it’ll help. The fundamental issues remain, and a broader user base won’t solve them. And what is your take? Share in the comments! […]

Gaming Industry Research Tips #1

1. You Target Audience Is Not Always Visible While studying reviews is a basic step, it’s crucial to consider the majority of players who don’t express their opinions online. To learn about their preferences, tastes, and habits, delve into reports from public companies. You might be surprised to discover that a game, seemingly a failure, can actually be a successful project in terms of copies sold. For mobile games, gather as many metrics as possible from the targeted market, such as gender split, playtime, and spending habits. These metrics can reveal more about your players than reviews ever could. The minorities are loud, but the majority often speak through their actions. 2. Actually Play Games Play. Play a lot. This hands-on experience will not only give you valuable insights into the genre you’re targeting but also speed up all your […]

Squad Busters: Why 50% Daily Revenue Drop Doesn’t Bust New Formula

What do we have a month after the release of Squad Busters? Well, the numbers are down, public sentiment isn’t in favor of the game and I play the game less than I thought I would. But why am I still optimistic about it?To answer this, we teamed up with brilliant game analyst Alexandra Dedyukhina and conducted a thorough deconstruction of the game and its performance over the first month. In short, our optimism comes from 2 key points: 1. The game stands unique in Supercell’s portfolio. Despite potential audience cannibalization due to the cross-IP setting, Squad Busters does stand out.2. Most of the issues causing player drop-off are fixable. With time, research, and consistent updates, the overall experience can be significantly improved.3. We saw the masters of LiveOps at work. Remember how Supercell turned Brawl Stars from an all-time low […]
