Fragbite acquired Playdigious in 2021 for €5 million and described the sale as a “successful investment,” with the studio now valued more than double its acquisition price. Macro: EA’s $55B Acquisition - In-Depth Analysis from an Operator’s Perspective This acquisition marks a somber ending for a company that began with a noble mission. In 1983, founder Trip Hawkins created Electronic Arts to empower a new class of entrepreneur: the “Software Artist.” That vision of championing creators feels worlds away from the EA of today—a scaled publisher of big IP, more focused on commercialism than artistry. In that light, the acquisition feels like a natural, if uninspired, fit. Trip’s original vision for Electronic Arts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b89-7msvlac&ab_channel=JosephKim So, why did the largest leveraged buyout in history happen now? MTG’s Big Split: Midcore vs. Casual & Some Departures

Modern Times Group (MTG) just dropped big news: the mobile gaming giant is redrawing its map. Forget one giant group. MTG will run like a Gaming Village split into two Districts, Midcore & Casual. MTG went full mobile-first pure play in 2022. The Plarium acquisition supercharged that vision, and now the group is setting up its next 3–5 years of growth. With heavy hitters running Midcore, fresh leadership at Casual, and an upcoming CMD reveal, MTG is clearly aiming to be more than just another holding company. Maria Redin puts it simply: “We’re building one of the strongest homes for game makers.” The New Map: Two Districts Midcore District Anchored by Plarium (and Futureplay), plus MTG’s powerhouses InnoGames, Hutch, Snowprint, and Ninja Kiwi. Leadership reshuffle: Oliver Bulloss (ex-Zynga, King, Rovio) takes the CEO chair. Hendrik Klindworth (InnoGames co-founder) steps in […]

SSPs Under Fire: Verve’s Layoffs Signal an Ad Tech Shakeup?

The SSP playbook is breaking. Verve, the Swedish ad tech player with a $740 million market cap, has just cut parts of its PubNative & Smaato teams. The signal to the market is clear: SSPs are feeling the squeeze. Why SSPs Are Struggling The supply path is being compressed from both ends. Buyers shift away from open exchange. According to ANA benchmarking, PMPs now account for ~88% of nonsocial programmatic, up from ~65% just a year ago. That’s a massive tilt toward curated pipes. DSPs are cutting out middlemen. The Trade Desk’s Kokai openly labels SSP routes as “resellers,” steering spend into OpenPath and other direct connections. Margins are collapsing. Magnite’s DV+ cost per ad request dropped 26% last year, and a brutal 45% in CTV, just to stay in play. For SSPs, that means higher costs to win lower-margin […]
