Microsoft to Work on 3D Gaming Experiences for Copilot

Ömer Yakabagi

Microsoft is pushing Copilot beyond chat and into the world of AI-driven gaming, with a strong focus on 3D experiences and possibly even mobile gaming.

A new job listing suggests that Microsoft is developing advanced gaming capabilities for Copilot, seeking a senior software engineer in Beijing with expertise in 3D rendering engines like Babylon.js, three.js, and Unity—tools commonly used for browser-based and mobile games. This could hint at Microsoft’s ambition to bring AI-enhanced gaming to a wider audience, including mobile platforms.

Microsoft has been laying the groundwork for this expansion. In February, it introduced Muse, an AI model trained on Ninja Theory’s Bleeding Edge, designed to understand 3D game environments, game physics, and player actions. This allows AI to dynamically generate gameplay, paving the way for interactive, AI-driven experiences.

Microsoft is embedding Copilot into video games, starting with Minecraft. Last May, Microsoft showcased how Copilot could assist players in crafting items, locating resources, and navigating gameplay—all powered by AI. If this technology extends to mobile-friendly games, it could transform how players interact with AI companions in real time.

Beyond gameplay, Microsoft has been experimenting with “character-based” AI features in Copilot. In January, reverse engineer Alexey Shabanov discovered animated AI characters designed to interact with users through sound effects and gestures—potentially hinting at a future where AI-driven NPCs become more lifelike and engaging.

With AI-generated content, real-time assistance, and the potential for mobile integration, Microsoft’s gaming ambitions for Copilot could redefine interactive entertainment. If successful, AI-driven gaming could become a major pillar of the Copilot ecosystem—blurring the lines between chatbot, game assistant, and fully immersive AI-powered gaming experiences.
