Well, it’s official. Amazon App Store is bidding farewell to Android.
As of August 20th, the store will shut its doors on Android devices, marking the end of an era for Amazon’s alternative app marketplace.
What’s Changing?
🚫 No More App Submissions – Developers can no longer submit new apps to the Amazon App Store on Android. ⏳ Final Updates Until August 20th – Existing apps can still receive updates, but only until the shutdown date. 💰 Amazon Coins Discontinued – The Coins program will vanish alongside the store, but any unspent coins will be refunded. 🛑 No More In-App Purchases in Japan – Japanese users will lose the ability to make purchases through the store on Android, though other marketplaces will still function temporarily.
What Stays?
📱 Amazon Devices Still Supported – The Amazon App Store isn’t disappearing completely. It will continue to operate on Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices, keeping its ecosystem alive within Amazon’s hardware lineup.
The Bigger Picture
Why?
This move signals a shift in Amazon’s mobile app strategy, reinforcing its focus on its own ecosystem rather than competing head-to-head with Google Play on Android. For developers and users, it’s the end of an option—but for Amazon, it’s a repositioning for the future.
